Keeping Girls Safe in Schools

The project involves number of initiatives such as constructing girls sanitary bathrooms (change room), distributing of Reusable sanitary pads for free to rural poor school girls, Holding engagement meetings between parents, mother groups, teachers and Village committees (Village Development Committees/Area Development Committees). These initiatives are geared towards reduction of school drop-outs among girls.

We are expanding this project to more schools in Rumphi and Chitipa Districts.

Goals of the Project:
• A society where school girls in rural areas have access to adequate locally made for vulnerable girls and improving sanitary facilities in schools
• Utilization of community Mother Groups (Volunteer women working on feminine issues) to help in promoting girls education and equip girls with menstrual hygiene management skills in Rural areas of Rumphi District to reduce drop-out rates of school girls


  • Hope for Relief has distributed 4946 Reusable sanitary pads to 1733 needy girls in 5 Primary schools and 2 Community Day Secondary Schools.
  • 63 members of mother groups have been mentored on girls Menstrual Hygiene Management and Sewing of Reusable Sanitary pads using hand needles.
  • Built one Change Room at Chankhomi community Day Secondary School.
  • Over 2,000 Vulnerable Poor Rural girls aged 12-18 have benefited from Menstrual Hygiene Education conducted by Hope for Relief Organization from the year 2016-2018.

Some of the organisations which have contributed to this project from 2016-2018 include: Spirit in Action, Waterloo Foundation, de Antoinette Metternich-Zandhuis Stichting, Rebecca Hussey Foundation, Peartree Foundation and other individual donors from Alvegem Community in Belgium.
