Ending Early Girl Marriages

Local school girls sharing their stories

This is a new project for 2019, supported by Mundo Cooperante.

The project strives to reduces cases of Girl-Child Marriages aged 10-16 in rural area of Kameme in Chitipa District, Northern Malawi, targeting Elengo, Nahatobo primary and Kameme Community Day Secondary Schools.

Many rural poor vulnerable girls, disabled girls in Chitipa District drop out of school; they marry early, have many children, and spend their life time in poverty. In Kameme area, parents arrange marriages without girl’s consent, dowry system of marriages makes parents to force their girl children for marriage. Besides, Female Genital Multilation endangers girls’ health.  560 girls got married before the age of 16 in rural area of Kameme from January to December 2018.

The project is geared to reduce this number to 224 by March 2020. The project will initiate community by-laws that will end bad cultural practices and attitudes that perpetuates early marriages, increase the number of early marriages cases reported and concluded at the police and court of law through offering paralegal services and increase the enrollment and retention of rural poor and disabled girls in both primary and secondary schools in rural area of Kameme area, Chitipa District, Northern Malawi by empowering women, men and girls on girls education and rights.
